Mary Morton’s generosity made it possible for the Madison Police Department K9 Unit to acquire K9 Carl, MPD’s only explosive detection dog.
K9 Karl is a German Shepherd born in Slovakia. He joined the MPD K9 Unit in May 2016 and serves alongside Sergeant Jeff Felt.
Mary served on the Capital K9s Board of Directors for five years. She developed the Volunteer Veterinarian Project in which local veterinarians sponsor each of the MPD K9s and provide their wellness care at no charge. Additionally, she helped establish an emergency and specialty care program in partnership with Veterinary Emergency Services, Madison Veterinary Specialists, and UW Veterinary Care. This was a critical piece in ensuring comprehensive care for Madison’s police dogs.
Her interest in Capital K9s, and in sponsoring a K9, was inspired by the life of her German Shepherd, Carl. Mary is dedicated to the promotion of working dogs who improve the quality of our lives and the safety of our community.
